How to find your pool guy?

Swimming Pool Installation

Source: Popular Mechanics

Getting a swimming pool is believed to be a dream for many homeowners.

However, many new pool owners are known to describe the process as a nightmare, for different reasons.

One of the major reasons is the inability to find a reliable pool guy who is capable of installing a pool, maintaining it as well as fixing any pool-related issues.

If you are seriously considering having a swimming pool in your home, you are probably aware that you have to make a lot of decisions.

And at the top of the list would be choosing a reputable pool guy.

Why do you need a renowned pool guy?

Because the final result of your swimming pool project depends on the expertise, reliability, and reputation of your pool guy.

To help you in this selection, we have put together a few tips:

Word of Mouth

When it comes to finding a good and reputable pool contractor, your first source of information should be your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors.

The people you already know and are close to will be the best ones to be straightforward and true about their experience.

One of the main benefits of word of mouth over other sources, like online reviews, is that you do not have to stay alert for spammers or come across clients who could have baseless animosity.

When you go for word of mouth, you will be able to get details of the exact person they hired so you can receive the same level of professionalism and service.

Online Reviews

If you do not have access to the opinions or recommendations of trustworthy local sources, you can always reach out to the many online sources.

While your neighbor or a friend’s experience with a pool installation company or pool contractor would be limited to a single person of contact, review websites often provide an extensive scope of client interaction with a contractor or company.

However, when reading reviews online, your focus should not be inclined toward a single review, but rather concentrate on the overall experience rating from clients.

Another aspect to consider is the date of the reviews. Make sure that you read reviews that are current, and not something from 2010.

If you find too many negative reviews and decreasing ratings in the most recent reviews, it is better to avoid that particular contractor or company.

Questions to Ask

Even after you shortlist a few pool contractors, it is important that you grill them, at least with a few questions, to make sure that they are the right fit.

Here is a list of questions you can ask:

1. How many pools have you built so far?

This is one of the first questions you should ask your potential pool guy.

As a matter of fact, this one is quite a tricky question because you are not really expecting the right answer here.

If you have already asked a few questions to the guy and did not receive satisfactory answers, but you notice that he jumps at this question and starts boasting, you probably have the wrong guy.

Once you obtain an answer for this question, move on to asking the number of pools they built in the previous year.

And as your final follow up question, ask them about the number of references they can provide of those installations.

If a pool guy provides references of less than half of his previous clients, consider it a red flag.

2. Can you give me a gist of your experience in the industry?

For this question, you need to look for answers that involve details about the person or company’s license and insurance.

If it’s a pool installation company, ask to see if the licensed name is the same as that of the company. If not, dig deeper.

Also, find out the number of years the pool guy or the company has been in the business.

This is important because more than 40% of contractors are known to fail within just three years of entering the business.

3. What products or brands do you use?

Your aim here is to see if the products to be used by the pool guy have good reviews in the market.

The brands should be reliable and the products must be backed by warranties.

4. Do you provide workmanship warranty?

Basically, a workmanship warranty covers issues such as structural problems, plumbing leaks, etc.

The legal minimum workmanship warranty is one year in most states.

Ask your pool guy the duration of his workmanship warranty.

Ask him in detail the repairs or issues covered by the warranty.

Make sure that you thoroughly understand the details of the workmanship warranty and satisfied with the same before proceeding to the next step.
